RENEE'S SIGH OF RELIEF WHEN she opened the door hit Sera like a punch in the gut. She had been so rude after this woman revealed a dark secret, and she had been right. And here she was welcoming Sera back into her home again like nothing had happened.
“Nora isn’t with you?” Renee asked as she looked over Sera’s shoulder.
She shook her head, numb from the revelation of the encounter.
The grey-haired woman helped her remove her coat. “She left after you did, also needing some time to decompress. You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” she said gently, leading Sera to a table outside of the galley kitchen. “What brought you back?”
Sera slumped down into a chair, resting her head in her hands. Thoughts flew by like blurred scenery out a train window.
Putting a kettle of water on to boil, Renee sat across from her at the tiny two-person table just outside the kitchen. Not much else fit in a row house of that age.
“You were right. How is this even possible?” Sera lifted her head. “Solomon and Alexander. They’re…they’re not human.”
Renee nodded.
“That means Vicari is one of these creatures, too?” she asked.
“He is, and very old. He’s not an Eternal, but he works for one. She’s his maker,” Renee explained.
Sera rubbed her face with her hands. “I think you’re going to have to back up a bit.”
The kettle’s piercing whistle announced it was ready, and Renee’s chair creaked as she stood. She poured them each a fresh teacup.
“Let’s go sit somewhere more comfortable. This could take a while.” Renee nodded her head down the hall.
A few steps later, Sera sat in one of the worn wingback chairs in the library and kicked off her boots, tucking her legs under her. Sipping the tea, she let the warmth run through her, soothing her muscles and nerves. The steam slowly defrosted her nose.
“Let me start with what I know about these creatures. Let’s continue to call them vampires for simplicity’s sake, but I’m not entirely sure the term is correct,” Renee began. “I’ve done as much research as I can, but without directly interviewing one of them, I’ve only gathered so much.”
Sera gave a half smile at the thought of interviewing a vampire, still adjusting to the fact that they existed. Or at least something like a vampire.
As Renee shared what she knew about the supernatural creatures, a wave of nausea washed over Sera. How could she have been this blind? She had been so close to Lorenzo, and he had overturned a heavy table like it weighed nothing. She’d probably come close to being his next meal.
“Today’s vampire, however, is much weaker than twenty years ago. They still have extraordinary strength when compared to a human, and some can do light mind control if the human is vulnerable enough. But that ability weakens year by year. They won’t burn up during the day, but having heightened senses makes them strongest at night—”
“Why can’t they do any of that stuff anymore?” Sera interrupted, drawn into the story.
